S. M. Hulse received her B.A. from the University of Montana, her M.F.A. from the University of Oregon and was a fiction fellow at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Shann Ray grew up in Montana, spent part of his childhood on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation in southeast Montana and has served as a visiting scholar in Europe, Asia, and South America.
